Yelling about AI

I've had this conversation a few times. And it's frustrating.

I'll make an anti-AI remark in casual conversation. Just like "I can't believe ___ used AI for THAT" or something along those lines.

The response I get from people who use it is always the same: to immediately show me what they've "made" with it.

"But look how good this art is!" "I used it to see what my car would look like if I painted it" "I only use it to make memes"

And that's immediately followed up with justification

"It doesn't hurt artists if my particular version doesn't steal art" "Well I'm not selling it" "Don't worry, I still commission people, I just use this to make examples of what I want"

It's always about art because they make assumptions about my concerns. Since I'm an artist, obviously the only reason I would care is it "harming the art market" or whatever. In reality, that is the LEAST of my worries.

Usually I talk about how there's a google data center for AI being built near me despite major community outcry. This place has managed to lobby for the right to operate for the next 50 years without paying electricity, so the surrounding town's residents will pay for it instead.

The rebuttal I have gotten more than once is "Well actually, I did my research and the water and electricity used by data centers is nothing compared to what gets used in farming. Like cashews use so much water"

..........

And when I say "Farms aren't poisoning the air and water supply like data centers are. Farms make food we need to live. Data centers make nothing of value and rot your brain and destroy the environment."

and EVERY SINGLE TIME they say

"Well then it needs to be regulated!"

BUT IT'S NOT

AND THIS ADMINISTRATION ISN'T GOING TO

but they keep on using it anyway

because individual responsibility is a myth now

and being complacent in the destruction of everything is fine as long as you're getting something out of it personally, right?
